Sports Institute (PSI) was created in 1996 by then President Fidel V. Ramos to
heed the call to provide training needs of sports development throughout the
country. This was years after the 1992 National Sports Summit that crafted a
total of 38 resolutions, to which PhilSports is included.
On January 16, 2017, the Philippine Sports Commission under the leadership of Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez, relaunched the PSI, initiating several consultative meetings with all sports stakeholders to strengthen the grassroots development in the country and improve the elite athletes’ performance.
Ramirez tapped top-notch strength and conditioning coach Marc Edward Velasco as the PSI’s National Training Director, with the ultimate goal of having a sustainable grassroots program to fuel the elite program. With this, the Philippine Sports Institute now clings in its three different functions: grassroots sports development, high-performance and scientific-based training and sports education.
