PSC Statement on 12th ASEAN Para Games 2023

Published on

As the 12th ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia comes to an end, we celebrate multiple victories. And in all those victories, we witnessed how you shined brightly by highlighting your impressive talents and abilities in various events.

I am honored and overjoyed to congratulate everyone on your remarkable performances and astounding achievements in the 12th ASEAN Para Games. These achievements have not only brought glory once again to the Philippines but also serve as inspirations and motivations to future generations of para-athletes.

This year’s edition was a true testament to our theme, “Gintong Medalya: Kaya ng Para-Atleta”. Hindi lang “Kaya ng Para-atleta”, talaga namang kayang-kaya, ‘di ba? Thanks to your steadfast commitment and perseverance, 172-strong para-athletes are now bringing home 34 gold, 33 silver and 50 bronze for a total of 117 medals surpassing our performance in the 11th ASEAN Para Games in Solo, Indonesia (of 28 gold, 30 silver, and 46 bronze medals) last year. You deserve a loud and prolonged round of applause.

As I mentioned during our send-off last May 23, our fight in the ASEAN Para Games is not only about winning medals. Syempre masayang mag-uwi ng medalya para sa sarili, sa bayan, at sa pamilya. Ito’y nagsisilbing paalala at kumakatawan sa ating tagumpay. But what is truly meaningful to champions is the spirit and the attitude shown in the face of adversity in your journey as para-athletes. Beyond the medals, it is your wholehearted dedication and resilience that make you true champions. You continuously prove that anything is possible with passion, hard work, and a firm belief in yourselves. I encourage you to go, motivate and mold others to be like you.

By displaying your athletic abilities in Cambodia, you have exemplified the true essence of the ASEAN Para Games, promoting inclusivity, diversity, and unity among nations.

To our dedicated coaches, staff, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Paralympic Committee, families, media, and friends who have been there from beginning to end…maraming, maraming salamat. You offered endless encouragement and support critical to our success.

As we return home, remember that the results of these games will forever leave a mark on the sporting landscape of our country. You will continue to influence generations to overcome boundaries and limitations.

On behalf of the entire nation, congratulations! I salute you all for your remarkable performances and outstanding representation of the Philippines in the 12th ASEAN Para Games. You make us proud!

Mabuhay ang mga Para Atleta!

Mabuhay ang mga kampeon ng Pilipinas!
