BIOGRAPHY

Born in 1933, Loreto Carbonell went onto becoming one of Team Philippines’ best ballers, even ending up representing the country at the 1956 Melbourne Olympiad.

Carbonell started out as part of the San Beda College varsity team. Like most colleges, his team campaigned at the NCAA, further making a name for himself in the popular sport.

Eventually, Carbonell claimed his spot in the Philippines men’s national basketball team. Among his fellow hoopers were the great Carlos “Caloy” Loyzaga, Tony Genato, Charlie Badion, Eddie Lim, Leonardo Marquisias, Martin Urra, Rafael Baretto, Ramoncito Campos and Tony Villamor, coached by none other than Leo Prieto. Team Philippines went to the 1956 Melbourne Olympics with this squad on the frontlines for basketball.

After which, the proud squad conquered one competition after another. The national cagers wound up clinching the 1958 Asian Games gold with Carbonell on the team. Two years later, his campaign with Team Philippines at the 1960 Asian Basketball Confederation brought the country’s first title in the tourney.

After his notable stint in the national team, he went back to his alma mater, then served as a coach for the San Beda College basketball team, earning the team two NCAA titles in 1977 and 1978.

He was inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.
