BIOGRAPHY

Born on June 3, 1934, Pampanga-raised sprinter Isaac Gomez bannered the nation at the Asian Games to contribute to the one of the country’s best medal hauls at the continental sporting meet.

Standing at 5’5”, Isaac Gomez made the lineup for the Philippine team’s tracksters, teaming up with Remegio Vista, Pedro Subido, Enrique Bautista, and Inocencia Solis in time for the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo.

The lineup did not disappoint as the men’s team had brought home the gold in the 4x100m relay. Gomez specialized in the 100 meter sprint which was evident when he secured the bronze medal at the 100m singles event among the 20 participating nations.

The country ended the 1958 Tokyo with a haul of 8 golds, 19 silvers, and 20 bronzes, ranking 2nd overall – one of the best medal hauls for the country next to the 1954 Manila.

This feat of Gomez did not go unnoticed as he had qualified to banner the Philippine flag at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome at age 26. He competed in the men’s 100m and delivered a time of 11.0 seconds, and in the men’s 4x100m relay with a time of 41.4 seconds.

After his Olympic stint, Gomez returned to the Asian Games with the same relay team, now fueled with confidence. The men’s team repeated their 1958 success as they defended their title in the 4x100m relay in the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta.

The successful sporting career of Isaac Gomez proved magnificent for the country as he was inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
