CLOSE to 600 participants from about 30 barangays in two municipalities here joined the two-day Bagtik Moserbisyo Children's Games Festival dubbed "Duwa Nan Batang Siargaonon" that was initiated by Surigao del Norte First District Representative Francisco "Bingo" Matugas and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Sports Institute.
Rep. Matugas, in his message during the opening Friday, said the Children's Games aims to promote active lifestyle among children through sports and keep them away from illegal drugs and gadgets addiction.
PSI Mindanao coordinator Pochollo Elegino said, "The Children's Games here is an initiative of Congressman Matugas and we are just observing to give inputs.
Hopefully the PSC can return here by September to conduct a Children's Games for the entire Siargao."
He said barangay children of the Municipality of Sta. Monica, Surigao del Norte played during the first day while barangay kids of the Municipality of Dapa, Surigao del Norte were treated to a day of fun and games yesterday.
Games played included Suot Lusot, Karirang Takbo, Tug of War, Karirang Talong and Bingo Went to Town.
Leah, 10 years old, thanked organizers for putting up an event for children like them.
"Bibo kaayo, dako ang kalipay nako nga makadula ko diri sa Children's Games (I really had so much fun. I'm so happy to had played here in the Children's Games)," she said.
The PSC-PSI's version of the Children's Games is a major component of the national sports agency's Sports for Peace Program. It was first launched in 2008 during the first time that William "Butch" Ramirez served as PSC chairman and only revived in Davao City last May 2017 amidst the war that erupted in Marawi City and the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao by President Rodrigo R. Duterte.
The PSC-PSI's Children's Games was also cited by Unesco being the only government agency-initiated program for the youth that brings together Indigenous People, Christians and Muslims through sports in a bid to promote peace and unity.
Last year, close to 10,000 from different parts of the country participated in several Children's Games conducted.PSC-PSI
