TWO-TIME world champion gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo of the Philippines hopes to perform well in the 2022 FIG Artistic World Championships in Liverpool, England slated from October 29 to November 6.
The 22-year-old gymnast qualified in the World Championships after topping the men's floor exercise at the 9th Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships in Doha, Qatar.
He also bagged two more gold medals coming from the vault and parallel bars events and a silver medal in the individual all-around competition at the Aspire Academy Dome.
"My goal in every competition is to win and I am happy to achieve that in Qatar. Hopefully, I will be successful in Liverpool," said Yulo on Tuesday during the belated victory party at the Heritage Hotel ballroom in Pasay City to celebrate the success of the national gymnastics teams in the 31st Vietnam Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and the prestigious Asian meet.
He arrived last Sunday.
Aside from Yulo, the men's team of John Ivan Cruz, Juancho Miguel Besana, Justine Ace de Leon, Jan Gwynn Timbang and John Matthew Vergara also competed in Qatar and finished eighth overall in the all-around event.
"We would like to celebrate the success of our national gymnasts who gave Filipino sports fans much pride and joy for their accomplishments in the last Vietnam SEA Games and Asian gymnastics championship. This is the least we can do for them," said Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion.
In Vietnam, the Philippines placed second overall in gymnastics, pocketing seven gold medals, four silver medals and three bronze medals. Yulo, himself, delivered five golds.
The highlight of the victory party was the awarding of the Order of Lapu Lapu with the rank of Kamagi to Yulo, who was unable to receive the medal from President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in Malacanang three weeks ago as the gymnast returned to Japan after the SEA Games to prepare for the Asian Championships.
Philippine Sports Commission commissioner Celia Kiram, representing chairman William Ramirez, presented the medal to Yulo, who will stay in the country for a few days to spend time with his family before going back to Japan to train and compete.
