Severino 2nd in FIDE online chessfest

Severino, the pride of Silay City, Negros Occidental, battled Tazbir (ELO 2535) to a draw in the fifth and final round to finish with 4.5 points on four wins and one draw in the tough 31-player tournament.

But Tazbir,who  had the same score as Severino, clinched the championship by the slimmest of margins, 10.5-10, in the second tiebreak..    

Despite settling for a runner-up finish, the 34-year-old Severino is satisfied with his performance.

"Thank you FIDE Commission for Disabled and Organizing Committee it was an excellent tournament.More tournaments please ,” said Severino, who is preparing for the IPCA World Championship in Israel and the first World Chess Olympiad for the differently able.

"Ang tagumpay ko ay tagumpay ng lahat ng Pilipinong atleta at taong may kapansanan! Kaya nating manalo sa laban," added Severino, who personally thanked his coach James Infiesto.

A multiple gold-medal winner in the Asian and ASEAN Para Games, Severino pocketed 400 euros or P22,000 for his effort.

Among Severino's victims were IM Yuri Meshkov of Russia, FM Vit Valenta of the Czech Republic and WIM Natasha Morales Santos.

Meshkov wound up third with four points, followed by Denis Palin of Russia in fourth pkace  and Ace Gabor of Hungary in fifth place.

Severino shared his success with National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero "Butch" Pichay and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William "Butch" Ramirez.
