Obiena struts stuff in Germany

Fresh from a runnerup finish in the Netherlands, EJ Obiena gets another chance to improve on his jump when he competes in the 11th Jump & Fly Tournament today in Mossingen Germany.

Obiena, the first Filipino to earn a berth to the Tokyo Olympics, did 5.80 meters to place second behind world record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden, who jumped 6.10, in the FBK Games in Hengelo.

Duplantis and Obiena’s training partner, Thiago Braz of Brazil, the 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist, won’t be in Germany but he will have to contend with the solid German trio of Oleg Zernickel, Torben Blech and Raphael Holzdeppe.

Zernikel boasts of a best jump of 5.84 meters while both Blech and Holzdeppe have done 5.80.

Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association president Philip Ella Juico said he does not want to put pressure on Obiena.

“Well, he will improve. He is trying a new technique and using a new pole for his tournaments,” Juico said.

“Anything can happen. I don’t want to put pressure on him. He’s trying his best and we’re doing anything we can to give him all the support.”
