Marcial has strong chance ‘to win gold’

Jerwin Ancajas believes that the Philippines has a strong chance of winning a gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics with Eumir Marcial.

“We really have a strong chance of winning a gold medal because they’re going to see a changed Eumir,” Ancajas, who has been training with Marcial in Los Angeles, California told The Manila Times.

Ancajas shared that Marcial has been hard at work since October last year, and he’s bent on winning that gold for the Philippines.

“I am witness to his strong work ethic. He really wants to win a gold medal. He’s not thinking of other things except for that gold,” said Ancajas, who is set to defend his IBF super-flyweight title for the ninth time against Jonathan Rodriguez on April 11 (Philippine time).

“I can’t really say anything about his style. My only advice for him is to pray and trust himself that he can beat his opponents. We know how good Eumir is,” Ancajas said of Eumir, a three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist.

Marcial made a successful professional debut last December when he beat American Andrew Whitfield via unanimous decision.

The 25-year-old boxer, who, like Ancajas, trains under the MP Promotions, will not do another professional fight to focus on his upcoming Olympic stint in Tokyo in July.

“We probably will return around the first week [of May] in the Philippines. There’s really no need to do another fight because it’s really about Tokyo,” said MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons.

“We’re not taking any chances to hurt his hand. He just had a lot of training here, good sparring, and rejoined the [Philippine boxing] team. Hopefully, there’s a tournament in India so he can get back in the mix with the amateur style. I think it’s much better to focus now for the Olympics than worry about doing a professional fight.”
