THE Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has started a long-overdue renovation of the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Construction workers on Monday morning started to put an enclosure around the historic stadium in preparation for a major facelift of the interior and exterior of the 85-year old venue.
The budget for the renovation of the Rizal Memorial Coliseum will come from the P800 million the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) gave to the government sports agency.
The renovation, the first major one in recent memory, is expected to be finished in time for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games where the Rizal Memorial Coliseum will be hosting some events.
The Rizal Memorial Coliseum was built in 1934 as part of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex which was used for the Far Eastern Games as well as the 1954 Asian Games.
The Rizal Coliseum hosted PBA, Micaa, UAAP and NCAA games in their earlier years before moving to much larger venues such as the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, Mall of Asia Arena, and Philsports Arena.
