The Philippine Amateur Baseball Association (PABA) is looking to hold bubble training for its women’s team that will be competing in the Women’s Baseball World Cup this March.
PABA president Chito Loyzaga said they are now seeking approval from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) to allow their women’s team to train in isolation with a couple of months left before the prestigious world tourney unwraps in the Mexican city of Tijuana.
He said the World Baseball-Softball Confederation (WBSC) had its final meeting yesterday to finalize the schedule of the event that was initially calendared last November.
“The WBSC had already scheduled the World Cup for March. Again, it’s not yet confirmed. There are still a lot on uncertainties because of the pandemic,” Loyzaga, a former sports commissioner and now auditor of the Philippine Olympic Committee, said.
He added that they want to join the bubble training of boxing, taekwondo and karatedo at the Inspire Sports Academy in Laguna in preparation for the world joust.
“We would be requesting the PSC that maybe we can join other athletes should the bubble training push through. We need to put the team together physically. Our team needs training.”
Loyzaga, a basketball legend, said their women’s team is on the rise.
In fact, the squad copped the bronze medal in the Women’s Baseball Asian Cup in 2019, giving it a ticket to the World Cup that was initially programmed last year.
But the global pandemic erupted, leaving the WBSC with no choice but to reschedule the tournament.
Now, with the tourney drawing near, Loyzaga admitted that they have yet to train together as a team.
“Even though we were in a pandemic, they were still able to continue their physical fitness training among themselves,” he said.
“What we need now is for them to practice together using a bubble setup.”
“We would initiate discussion with the PSC if they could help us in the cost of training.”
