Nineteen brawlers from the Visayas region cemented their campaign and bagged finals spots after conquering the Visayas Semi-Finals of the PSC-Pacquiao Amateur Boxing Cup in Calbayog City Land Transport Terminal yesterday.
 
Close to 40 young fighters from Bago City, Bayawan City, Cadiz City, Cebu City, Don Salvador Benedicto, Lacarlota City, Tacloban City, Mandaue City, Municipality of Murcia and Sipalay City took part in the tourney in front of hundreds of boxing enthusiast from Calbayog City.
 
Preliminary leg standout Joshua Belicena reintroduced himself in the ring after a staggering right hook that stopped Nixon Anito of Sipalay City just 36 seconds of the first round of their scheduled three-rounder.
 
The 15-year-old Belicena bared from Bago City bared that the punch was not of luck but of vigorous training for the tourney.
 
“Hindi po inaasahan ang stoppage win, pero matagal ko napo ‘yung ginagawa sa training,” said the Grade 9 student of Ramon Torres Malingen National High School.
 
Also mapping their impressive first round knockout wins were Michael Adolfo of Cadiz City (46-49kg.), John Paul Gabunelas of Cebu City (46-49kg.) and April Jay Abije of Mandaue City (52kg.).
 
Joining them were Jilyn Dela Cruz of Mandaue City (44-46kg.), Kim Catedrilla  and Rodel Gamo of Bago City (44-46kg.), Eduardo Jimenez of Cebu City (48kg.), Samuel Manale of Bago City (48kg.), Gaudfrey Lubiano of Mandaue City (50kg.), Jorin Varona of Lacarlota City (52kg.), Jominel  John Dahao of Murcia (52kg.), Sugar Ray Montales of Bago City (54kg.), Ian Lloyd Gesalan of Maasin City (54kg.), Nel Tambanillo of Bago City (52kg.), Jasper John Anida of Bago City (56kg.), Jhorne Pasculado of Mandaue City (56kg.), Romer Pinili of Bayawan City (60kg.) and Jarah Hury Aragon of Mandaue City (60kg.).
 
PSC Regional Coordinator for Visayas Nonnie Lopez emphasized that “boxing is one of the priority sports of the Philippine Sports Commission and and we will continue to find fresh talents all over the country through this kind of event.”
 
Maasin City will be hosting the Visayas Finals on May 5, 2018.
