Confirmations from different universities, colleges and school sports from across the country come pouring in as the Philippine Sports Commission holds the National Consultative Meeting on Collegiate Sports today and tomorrow, October 17 to 18 at the Multi-Purpose Arena of the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.

The active reception of different athletic groups gives an encouraging prognosis to the hoped-for outcome of the 2-day conclave – to achieve a united collegiate sports program in the country.

“I am looking forward to this meeting.  I see a fruitful exchange of ideas.  We will not pretend to solve everything but we can start,” volunteered Ramirez.

In the agency’s plans, collegiate sports is an important link towards establishing a stronger elite level.  Ramirez said that “if we could strengthen grassroots sports, strengthen school and university sports, we give a stronger foundation for our elite sports.”

Senator Sonny Angara will serve as keynote speaker in the event.  Congressman Mark Zambar has also confirmed his presence.

The PSC, under the chairmanship of Ramirez, gave focus on grassroots sports with numerous projects geared towards developing an active citizenry and encouraging integration of sports and movement in everyday life.  “You will notice that we have Children’s Games for the kids, Sports kontradroga as an intervention tool, Indigenous Games and Women in sports activities for those sectors and coaching seminars to arm our trainors and coaches in the provinces,” enumerated the PSC chief.

The consultative meeting is a follow-up on a previous consultation meeting held last year.
