Representatives from around 140 schools, colleges, universities and athletic associations will meet with the Philippine Sports Commission to continue discussions for strengthening school sports in line with the agency’s efforts to deepen sports engagement among the youth.

A National Consultative Meeting for Collegiate Sports will be held at the Philsports Multipurpose Arena in Pasig City from October 17 to 18 to help bolster support for sports in the collegiate level.  PSC Chairman William Ramirez has been actively campaigning for more partnerships with the Commission on Higher Education and the Department of education, recognizing the unquestionable link between education and sports in the molding of a well-rounded citizen.  “Remember that no less than the President has instructed us to make sports accessible to all, to involve the youth more,” said Ramirez.

The meeting serves as a follow-up to the previous gathering with school-based athletic associations held November last year.  It is hoped that from the first meeting, positive developments have opened up to allow more partnership between universities, colleges, athletic associations and the PSC.

He also stressed the importance of enriching the  university athletic associations as it serves as the talent pool of the national team as well as the professional leagues.   “University sports has always played a big role in elite sports.  It has been a rich ground of sports talent and we want to continue to support them,” explained Ramirez.

“PSC is very serious in strengthening grassroots sports.  School sports is a pertinent component of that effort,” stressed Ramirez.
