Sportsman Oliver Gan now has more reason to help in the development of young aspiring athletes.

The former junior golfer’s efforts didn’t go unnoticed after being named one of the 10 Outstanding Graduates in the 2018 Xavier Alumni Excellence awards night held recently at the Angelo King Multi-Purpose Hall in Xavier School in San Juan City.

It was early this year when the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), under the Philippine Sports Institute (PSI), appointed Gan as National Capital Region (NCR) program officer.

The position allowed Gan to provide his expertise in sports development by providing assistance and imparting knowledge to aspiring athletes, particularly his first love – golf.

The athletes from the grassroots level go to training as future members of the national team for various international competitions like the Olympics, Asian Games and worlds championships, as well as the Southeast Asian Games.

“It’s definitely an honor for me, for my family to be named among Xavier’s 10 Outstanding Graduates,” said Gan. “This award inspires me to continue what I’m doing now, and that is to help promote sports, help in the grassroots level in hopes to discover new athletes.”

Gan graduated from Xavier in 2001.

As the reigning national amateur champion, Gan recently the Philippines to top-10 finishes in the World Amateur Golfers Championships (WAGC) for two consecutive years (2017 and 2018) while serving as WAGC Philippines’s playing captain this year.

He topped the Division 1 of the WAGC National Final at Summit Point.

“To land among the top 10 was a feat in itself because at WAGC we battled more than 40 foreign countries, which sent some of their amateur golfers,” said Gan, who finished third in the individual category.

Gan also serves as the man in charge of Xavier’s golf team as he recently led the formation of the squad from Grades 2 to 12 in hopes to come up with future golfers for the national team.

“I wanted something that is well-organized. So, in consultation with AAXS Trustee for Sports Jon Kevin Sy and parents, we came up with this efficient program,” Gan said of the Xavier Team.
